Why Founder-Led Content Builds More Trust Than Ads
Most business owners I meet are spending money on Instagram ads but are completely invisible as people. Their company page posts product photos and discount announcements. Their personal profile has not been touched in two years. And then they wonder why their ad results are getting more expensive and less effective. The answer is simpler than most people expect — buyers in India are buying from people, not pages.
Think about how you personally make a buying decision. You see an ad, maybe you click it, maybe you do not. But if a friend sends you a recommendation, or you have been quietly watching someone talk about their work for three months and they seem to know what they are doing — that purchase happens faster and with far less hesitation. That is exactly what founder-led content does. It builds what no ad budget can shortcut: familiarity and trust.
I have seen this pattern clearly with manufacturers and service business owners in Bengaluru, Pune, Coimbatore and smaller towns. The ones who started putting out honest, unglamorous content — walking through their factory, explaining how they price a project, sharing what went wrong with a client delivery — started getting enquiries that said things like 'I have been following you for a while and I trust your process.' That sentence is worth more than a thousand impressions on a boosted post.
The biggest objection I hear is: 'I am not comfortable on camera' or 'I do not know what to say.' Both are real, but both are solvable. You do not need to perform. You need to share what you already know. If you have been running a business for seven years, you are sitting on a goldmine of useful knowledge that your buyers are actively searching for. A fabrication unit owner explaining why one grade of steel costs more than another. A boutique owner showing how she sources fabric. A consultant walking through how she structures a client engagement. That content is genuinely useful and it shows expertise without ever saying the word 'expert.'
The format matters less than the consistency. I always tell founders this — a 60-second vertical video shot on a decent phone inside your office or workshop will outperform a polished studio production that feels corporate and distant. People are not looking for production quality. They are looking for authenticity. If you are unsure where to even start structuring this into a workable system, spending an hour thinking through your content plan with someone who understands Indian business context helps enormously. That is exactly what I do during a one-to-one consultation.
LinkedIn and Instagram serve different purposes for founders and it is important not to treat them the same way. LinkedIn is where your B2B buyers, distributors, procurement heads and potential partners are spending time. Here, founder content that talks about business decisions, industry observations, client results and hard-learned lessons performs very well. Instagram is where your retail buyers, younger decision-makers and brand-curious audience lives. Here, the visual storytelling of your process, team and product world works better. Most founders I work with need to be active on at least one of these with personal content — not just their business handle. If you want to understand how to map this to your specific business type, the business growth workshops I run cover this with practical formats you can implement immediately.
One thing that stops founders from being consistent is overthinking what is worth sharing. My rule is simple: if you said something in a client meeting, a vendor call or a team discussion this week that the other person found useful — that is a post. You are not writing for a marketing degree. You are writing for one type of person: your future buyer. Speak to them directly. Tell them what you know. Answer the questions you get on WhatsApp every week. That is your content calendar, right there.
There is also a compounding effect that most founders do not see until six months in. Each post you put out under your name stays on the internet. It shows up when someone Googles you before a meeting. It is what a buyer reads at 11 PM when they are deciding between you and a competitor they found on JustDial. Paid ads vanish the moment you stop spending. Founder content keeps working long after you posted it. I have had clients tell me they got an enquiry from a LinkedIn post they wrote eight months earlier. That does not happen with a boosted reel.
If you are a founder reading this and you have been meaning to start showing up but have not yet — do not wait for the perfect setup or the perfect topic. Write one honest post this week about something real you dealt with in your business. Put your name on it. That is the beginning. Everything else — the format, the frequency, the platform — you figure out as you go.
