Why Your Google Business Profile Is Not Bringing Calls

Why Your Google Business Profile Is Not Bringing Calls — Website & SEO article by Abhijit JK, brand and business growth consultant

Most business owners I meet have set up their Google Business Profile once, uploaded a couple of photos, and then forgotten about it entirely. They assume being listed on Google Maps is enough. It is not. Listing is the beginning. What happens after that listing is what either brings calls or kills the opportunity silently.

Here is the most common situation I see. A manufacturer in Peenya or a service provider in Coimbatore shows up on Google when someone searches for what they offer. The person clicks on the profile. They see a business that has not posted in eight months, three blurry photos from 2021, no business hours listed, and a phone number that rings on a phone the owner checks twice a day. The potential buyer moves on to the next result. That competitor gets the call. You never even knew you had a visitor.

The first thing to check is your business category selection. Many business owners pick just one generic category. Google allows you to add primary and secondary categories. A printing business is not just a printing press. It could also be listed under graphic design services, corporate gifting, or packaging supplier depending on what you actually offer. The more specific and accurate your categories, the more relevant searches you appear in. Most people have not touched this setting since the day they created the profile.

Photos matter more than most founders realise. Not glamour shots. Real, current, useful photos. Pictures of your shop front, your production floor, your team at work, your finished products, your service being delivered. Google actively rewards profiles with regularly updated photos by showing them higher in local results. I have seen businesses jump from the fourth position to the top three on Google Maps simply by uploading ten good photos over two weeks. Nothing else changed. If you want to understand how your overall brand visuals are working together, I cover this in detail during my one-to-one consultation.

Reviews are the biggest trust signal in local search and also the most ignored asset Indian business owners have. You have happy customers. They just never thought to leave a review because no one asked them. The fix is embarrassingly simple. After you complete a job or deliver a product, send the customer your Google review link on WhatsApp with a short, honest message. Something like — 'Glad you liked the work. If you have two minutes, a Google review would really help us reach more people like you.' Most satisfied customers will do it when asked directly. Ten genuine reviews with responses from the owner can outperform a competitor with two hundred website pages.

Responding to every review is non-negotiable. Good reviews and bad ones. When you respond to a positive review, you are not just being polite. You are showing every future buyer who reads that page that a real person runs this business. When you respond to a negative review calmly and professionally, you are demonstrating integrity. Google also tracks your response rate and uses it as a signal. Owners who never respond are quietly penalised in ranking.

The Questions and Answers section on your Google Business Profile is something almost no one in India is using. Buyers can ask questions directly on your profile. If you do not answer them, a random user might, and that answer could be wrong or unhelpful. Worse, unanswered questions make your business look inactive. Go to your profile today and check if any questions are sitting there unanswered. Then proactively add your own questions and answers covering the things buyers always ask — pricing range, minimum order, area served, turnaround time, whether you do home visits. This content also gets picked up by Google Search for relevant queries.

Google Posts are another free feature that almost nobody uses after the first month. You can post offers, updates, new services, and events directly on your profile. These posts appear when someone looks you up. A fresh post from this week tells the buyer your business is active and relevant. A profile with the last post from fourteen months ago tells a very different story. Posting once a week takes ten minutes and costs nothing. If you are unsure how to build a consistent content habit across all your platforms, the topic comes up regularly in my business growth workshops where founders work through this together.

The single most practical thing you can do this week is open your Google Business Profile, go through every section one by one — description, hours, services, products, website link, phone number — and update whatever is outdated or missing. Do not wait for a developer or a marketing agency. This is your profile and Google gives you full control. A complete, active, regularly updated profile with genuine reviews and real photos is genuinely one of the most powerful free tools available to any Indian local business owner. Most of your competitors are not using it properly. That gap is your opportunity right now.
