Why Your Google Business Profile Is Not Bringing Enquiries

Why Your Google Business Profile Is Not Bringing Enquiries — Website & SEO article by Abhijit JK, brand and business growth consultant

Most business owners I meet check their Google Business Profile once when they set it up and never look at it again. They assume the profile is 'live' so the work is done. Then they wonder why competitors with smaller businesses are getting more calls from Google search.

Here is the reality. A Google Business Profile that is incomplete or poorly maintained is almost invisible in local search. Google's algorithm ranks profiles based on how complete, active and trustworthy they look. If your profile has a name, a phone number and nothing else, Google treats it as a low-confidence listing. It shows you lower. Sometimes it does not show you at all.

The first thing I check when a client says 'we don't get enquiries from Google' is the profile's category selection. Most business owners pick one broad category — say, 'Manufacturer' or 'Consulting Agency' — and stop there. Google allows you to add multiple categories. A precision parts manufacturer in Pune, for example, should also add 'Machine Shop', 'Metal Fabricator' and any other relevant category that matches actual buyer searches. The right categories mean the right search terms find you.

Photos are the second most ignored element. Profiles with ten or more photos — real photos, not stock images — get significantly more clicks than bare profiles. I have seen this with service businesses in Bengaluru who uploaded photos of their office, their team at work and a few client project shots. Their profile views doubled within 45 days. Buyers want to see that you are real before they call you. A blank profile creates doubt.

Then there is the business description. Most profiles have either no description or a copy-paste from the company brochure that nobody reads. Your Google Business description should answer three questions in plain language: what you do, who you serve and where you operate. Keep it under 200 words. Write it the way a customer would search for you, not the way you describe yourself in a pitch deck. If you are unsure whether your profile is helping or hurting your enquiries, a proper brand analysis can surface these gaps quickly.

Reviews are where most businesses lose the most ground. Your competitor with 47 reviews and a 4.6 rating will almost always outrank you if you have 8 reviews and a 3.9. The problem is not that customers are unhappy — it is that nobody asks for a review at the right moment. Build a simple habit: when a customer thanks you or you complete a job well, send them a direct link to your Google review page. That one step, done consistently, changes your ranking within 60 to 90 days. If you want a structured way to approach this alongside your broader digital presence, a one-to-one consultation is a good starting point.

One thing founders rarely notice is the Q&A section on their profile. Anyone can post a question there — and anyone can answer it, including strangers who know nothing about your business. I have seen profiles where a competitor or a random person posted an incorrect answer and the business owner had no idea. Check your Q&A section today. Post your own frequently asked questions there and answer them yourself. This also adds relevant keywords to your profile in a natural way.

Google Posts are another unused feature. You can publish short updates — an offer, a new service, a recent project, an event — directly on your profile. These show up in search results and give your profile freshness signals. Businesses that post at least twice a month tend to appear more often in the local 3-pack results. Most Indian business owners I work with have never used this feature once. It takes 10 minutes per post and costs nothing.

Getting enquiries from Google is not about tricks or paid ads. It is about making your profile clear, complete and active enough that Google trusts you and buyers feel confident calling you. Start with your categories, add real photos, clean up your description, get five more reviews this month and publish one Google Post this week. Those five actions alone will put you ahead of most local competitors. If you want someone to audit your full Google presence and local SEO setup properly, that is exactly what we do — start with a business growth diagnostic and we will tell you where you stand.
