Why Your Instagram Bio Turns Away the Right Buyers
Most business owners I meet spend hours creating Reels and posts but never look at their Instagram bio. They write it once when they created the account and forget it exists. That is a problem. Because before anyone watches your Reels, reads your captions or sends you a message, they check your bio. In under five seconds, they decide if you are worth following or trusting. If your bio is weak, everything else you post becomes wasted effort.
Here is what a weak bio looks like. I see this every week. It says something like: 'Founder at XYZ Interiors | Passionate about design | DM for enquiries 🙏'. That tells a buyer nothing useful. Are you in Bengaluru or Bhopal? Do you do residential or commercial? What is your price range? Who is your ideal client? A stranger lands on your profile, reads that bio, and leaves. Not because they are not interested in interiors. But because your bio gave them no reason to stay.
The reason this happens is that founders write bios to describe themselves, not to answer the buyer's actual questions. A buyer landing on your profile is thinking: Is this person relevant to me? Can they solve my problem? Are they trustworthy? Your bio needs to answer those three things fast. Not your passion, not your founding year, not your philosophy. What you do, who you do it for, where you operate, and what they should do next.
Let me give you a simple structure that works. Line one: What you do and who you serve. Example — 'Branded packaging for Bengaluru food businesses.' Line two: One specific proof or result. Example — '200+ brands launched since 2018.' Line three: A clear next step. Example — 'DM for a free 15-min call' or a link to your enquiry form. That is it. Short. Clear. Buyer-focused. No emojis that are just decoration. No vague words like 'passionate' or 'solutions-driven'.
The link in bio is where most founders also make a big mistake. They either leave it blank, link to their homepage, or use a link-tree with eight options. A buyer who clicks that link is already interested. Do not send them to a homepage where they have to hunt for what they want. Send them to one focused page — a service page, a portfolio page or an enquiry form. If you want help thinking through what that page should say and do, a one-to-one consultation can help you map that out properly.
Another thing I have noticed with manufacturers and product businesses specifically — they often put their product range in the bio. Five product categories listed out with slashes. That reads like a catalogue, not a brand. Pick your strongest one or the one you most want enquiries for. You can always talk about everything else in your posts and Stories. The bio needs one clear signal, not a menu.
Profile photo and name field are also part of your bio strategy, even if people do not think of them that way. Use a clear logo or a founder photo — whichever builds more trust in your category. Service businesses usually do better with a founder face. Product businesses usually do better with a clean logo. And your name field is searchable. So if your account name is something cryptic like '@xyzstudios2018', make sure your name field says 'Interior Designer Pune' or 'Corporate Gift Supplier India'. That is how you show up when buyers search.
I run business growth workshops where founders often realise for the first time that their Instagram profile is working against them — not because of bad content, but because the bio is unclear. When we fix it during the session, some of them start getting DMs within a week from the right kind of buyers. Not viral traffic. Just the right people, finally understanding what you do and feeling confident enough to reach out.
So this month, open your Instagram profile on your phone. Read your bio as if you are a stranger visiting for the first time. Ask yourself: Would I know what this business does? Would I know if it is relevant to me? Would I know what to do next? If the answer to any of those is no, rewrite it today. It takes twenty minutes. It costs nothing. And it quietly fixes one of the most common reasons your Instagram brings you followers but never brings you buyers.
