Why Your Instagram Reels Get Views But No Business
Most business owners I meet are putting out Reels consistently. Some are even getting decent views — 5,000, 20,000, sometimes more. But when I ask them how many enquiries or sales came from those Reels in the last three months, there is a long pause. Then they say, 'Not much, actually.' That pause tells me everything.
The problem is not effort. The problem is not even the algorithm. The problem is that most business Reels are built to get attention, not to build trust or drive action. There is a big difference between those two goals. Attention is easy to buy with a trending audio and a quick transition. Trust takes something more deliberate.
Here is what I see constantly. A manufacturer in Coimbatore makes beautiful Reels of his factory floor — machines running, sparks flying, workers in action. Great visuals. Gets a few thousand views. But the caption says 'We manufacture quality steel components' and the bio says 'DM for enquiries.' That is not a business Reel. That is a factory tour with no call to action that a buyer would actually respond to. The viewer watches, thinks 'impressive,' and scrolls on. Nothing pulls them into a conversation.
The first thing to fix is clarity of audience. Most business owners make Reels for everyone. A Reel for everyone is a Reel for no one. Before you shoot anything, ask yourself: who is the one person I want to watch this and take action? If you are a B2B manufacturer, that person is a procurement manager or a business owner, not a random 22-year-old scrolling at midnight. Your content, your language, your setting — all of it needs to speak to that one person. If you are unsure who your actual buyer is or what they care about, doing a proper brand analysis before making more content will save you months of wasted effort.
The second thing to fix is what I call the missing middle. Most business Reels jump from 'here is what we do' straight to 'contact us now.' There is nothing in between that builds confidence. In real life, a buyer needs to feel like they understand you, trust you and believe you can solve their specific problem before they will reach out. Your Reels need to do that same work. Show a problem your customer faces. Show how you have solved it for someone like them. Show the result. That three-part structure works far better than any trending sound ever will.
Captions matter more than most founders realise. I have seen Reels with 30,000 views and a caption that says just 'Our latest project 🔥.' That is a wasted opportunity. Your caption is where you do the actual selling — not in an aggressive way, but in a conversational, specific way. Write it like you are explaining something useful to a customer sitting across from you. End with one clear question or one clear next step. Not five options. One.
Another pattern I notice with Indian business owners is that they treat their Instagram bio as a formality. It is not. When someone watches your Reel and gets curious, the first place they go is your bio. If your bio says 'Helping businesses grow 🚀' or lists three random emojis, you have lost them. Your bio should tell a first-time visitor exactly what you do, who you do it for, and what to do next. That link in bio should go somewhere useful — a WhatsApp chat, a specific service page, or a short enquiry form. Not your homepage. Not a Linktree with eight options.
I worked with a wedding décor brand in Bangalore that was getting solid Reel views but almost no bookings through Instagram. When we looked at the content properly, the Reels were all aesthetic showcase videos — beautiful, but generic. Brides watching them had no way to understand the price range, the process or whether this brand understood their specific style. We shifted the content to short 'behind the booking' Reels — showing a client brief, then the final result, then a line about what made that wedding unique. Enquiries from Instagram went up noticeably within six weeks. Not because of better editing. Because the content gave people a reason to trust them. If you want to think through a content direction like this for your own business, a one-to-one consultation is a good place to start.
Reels can genuinely work for Indian MSMEs — manufacturers, service businesses, retailers, consultants, all of them. But they work when they are built around one goal: giving the right person enough confidence to take the next step. Views are vanity. Enquiries are the point. If your current Reels are not doing that, the fix is usually not more content — it is better-directed content. Start with one Reel this week that speaks directly to your best customer's biggest hesitation. That single Reel, done well, will do more for your business than thirty trending-audio posts ever will.
