Why Your Instagram Reels Get Views But No Enquiries
Most business owners I meet are excited when their Reel crosses 10,000 views. They share it with their team, show it to their spouse, and wait for the enquiries to roll in. Nothing comes. Two days later, they are back to square one wondering if social media even works for their kind of business. The problem is not Instagram. The problem is what the Reel was built to do.
Views and enquiries are two completely different outcomes. Instagram's algorithm rewards content that keeps people watching, sharing, and saving. That content is usually entertaining, surprising, or emotionally satisfying. But content that gets enquiries needs to do something different — it needs to make the right person say, 'I need this. Let me reach out.' These two goals almost never live in the same Reel unless you build it that way deliberately.
Here is what I see constantly with manufacturers, service businesses, and retail brands in Bengaluru and beyond. They create Reels about their industry, their process, behind-the-scenes footage, or trending audio with their product in the frame. The content looks good. It gets saves and shares. But the people saving it are competitors, students, or curious scrollers — not buyers. The content is attracting the wrong audience entirely.
The first fix is audience clarity. Before you shoot a single frame, ask yourself one question: who exactly do I want to DM me after watching this? A textile exporter wants procurement managers from Delhi or Surat. A coaching institute wants parents of Class 10 students in their city. A B2B software firm wants operations heads at mid-sized companies. Each of these audiences needs a completely different type of Reel — different language, different pain point, different call to action. Broad content designed to 'reach more people' usually reaches nobody useful.
The second problem is what happens inside the Reel itself. I have seen founders spend three days editing a beautiful product video and then end it with their logo and a generic tagline. That is not a call to action. A real call to action tells the viewer exactly what to do and why to do it right now. 'DM us the word QUOTE and we will send you pricing in 24 hours' works far better than 'Follow for more.' If your Reel does not end with a specific, low-friction next step, you are leaving enquiries on the table every single time.
The third issue is consistency of message across your profile. A potential buyer watches your Reel, gets interested, and taps your profile. What do they find? If your last 12 posts are a mix of motivational quotes, festival wishes, team photos, random product shots, and one trending audio video — they cannot figure out what you actually do or why they should trust you. Your profile needs to do the job of a landing page. It should tell a visitor who you help, how you help them, and what to do next — within five seconds of landing there. If your profile is scattered, even a great Reel will not convert.
There is also a reach problem that founders do not address honestly. Most business owners have followers who are friends, family, old colleagues, and competitors. This is especially true if the account is under 2,000 followers and has never run any targeted content. Organic reach within that audience will never generate business enquiries because those people are not your buyers. You either need to actively grow the right follower base through niche hashtags, collaborations, and location-based content — or you need to put a small paid budget behind your best-performing Reels and target the exact profile of your buyer. I discuss this in detail during my one-to-one consultation sessions with founders who are frustrated with exactly this situation.
If you have been posting Reels for three months or more without a single direct enquiry, do this audit this week. Pick your last ten Reels. For each one, write down: who is this for, what problem does it address, and what does it ask the viewer to do? If you cannot answer all three questions for even half your content, you have found your real problem. It is not the algorithm. It is that your content was never designed to generate business — it was designed to fill the posting calendar. Good content strategy starts with the outcome first, then works backwards to the format. I cover this framework in my business growth workshops for small business teams.
Instagram Reels can absolutely generate enquiries for Indian businesses — I have seen it work for interior designers, food brands, industrial suppliers, and professional services firms. But it only works when the content is built around a specific buyer, addresses a real problem they are searching for answers to, ends with a clear next step, and sits inside a profile that backs it up with trust and context. Views are vanity. Enquiries pay salaries. Build for enquiries.
