Why Your Instagram Reels Get Views But Zero Business

Why Your Instagram Reels Get Views But Zero Business — Social Media article by Abhijit JK, brand and business growth consultant

Most business owners I meet are frustrated with Instagram. They spent two months posting Reels consistently. Some videos crossed 10,000 views. A few even got shared. But enquiries? Almost none. So they either blame the algorithm or give up entirely. Both are the wrong move.

Here is the real problem. Reels are a discovery tool. They get you in front of people who have never heard of you. But discovery alone does not create trust, and trust is what triggers a business enquiry. Most founders skip the middle step entirely. They go straight from 'here is a Reel about my product' to 'why isn't anyone calling me?' That gap in the middle is where the sale actually happens.

I have seen this pattern repeatedly with manufacturers and service businesses in Bengaluru and beyond. A steel fabricator posts a satisfying factory video. It gets 40,000 views. Comments pour in. But there is no bio link, no clear next step, no content that explains what they actually do, who they serve, or why someone should trust them over the next supplier. The viewer watches, moves on and forgets. You entertained them. You did not sell to them.

The fix is not to stop making Reels. The fix is to think about your content in three layers. The first layer is reach content — Reels that get you discovered. Behind-the-scenes videos, process videos, satisfying product shots, relatable business situations. These attract strangers. The second layer is credibility content — posts, carousels or short videos that answer the questions a serious buyer would ask. Testimonials, case studies, before-and-after work, FAQs about your service. This is what converts a curious viewer into someone who considers buying. The third layer is conversion content — a direct offer, a call to action, a reason to message you today. Most businesses only do layer one and then wonder why nothing converts.

Your Instagram bio is doing more damage than your content. I check bios every time a founder tells me their Reels aren't working. Half the time the bio says something like 'Passionate about quality | DM for orders' and nothing else. No clarity on who you serve, what city or region you operate in, what problem you solve. A buyer who lands on your profile after watching your Reel has ten seconds to decide if you're worth following up with. If your bio doesn't answer 'what do you do and who is it for', they leave. If you want a proper look at how your brand is presenting itself online, a brand analysis will show you exactly where the trust gaps are.

Another mistake I see constantly — treating every Reel as a standalone piece with no follow-through. Someone watches your video about packaging design. They're interested. But your last twelve posts are random quotes, a festival greeting, a product photo with no context, and a reshared meme. There's no coherent thread. A serious buyer needs to see consistency to feel confident. Your content needs to tell a story across posts, not just in one video. This is why a content calendar isn't just about posting frequency — it's about sequencing what you say and when you say it, so that a new viewer who scrolls through your last 9 posts walks away understanding exactly what your business is about.

If you sell a high-consideration product or service — anything where the buyer thinks for more than a day before deciding — Instagram Reels alone will never close the sale. They start the journey. But you need other touchpoints: a WhatsApp link that works, a pinned post that explains your offer clearly, a highlight reel of client results, maybe even a simple landing page. I work with founders during our one-to-one consultation sessions to map out this exact journey — from the moment someone discovers you on Instagram to the moment they send that first enquiry message.

One practical thing you can do this week: go through your last 15 posts and ask honestly — if a total stranger saw only these posts, would they know what I sell, who I sell to, and why they should trust me? If the answer is no, you don't need better Reels. You need a clearer content strategy. Fix the profile, fix the content mix, and fix the call to action on your best-performing posts. That alone will change your conversion rate without you having to post more often.

Views are vanity. Enquiries are the point. The businesses I see winning on Instagram are not necessarily posting the most or getting the most views. They are posting with a clear purpose, speaking directly to one type of buyer, and making it stupidly simple for that buyer to take the next step. Social media should feed your pipeline — not just your follower count.
