Why Your Instagram Reels Get Views But No Enquiries
Most business owners I meet are thrilled when their Reel crosses 10,000 views. They show me their phone with genuine excitement. Then I ask one question: how many enquiries did it bring? The answer is almost always the same. Zero. Maybe one. And that one was someone asking for the price of something you do not even offer anymore. Views are not business. They are attention. And attention without direction goes nowhere.
Here is what is actually happening. Instagram is built to keep people watching. When you make a Reel that entertains or surprises, the algorithm pushes it to strangers who have never heard of your business. These people watch, they enjoy, they move on. They are not your customers. They were never going to be. The platform gave you reach. But reach into the wrong room does not fill your order book.
The real problem is not your content quality. Many of the business owners who come to me for a brand analysis are making genuinely good Reels — well shot, good music, decent editing. The problem is that the content has no commercial architecture. There is no path from 'I watched this' to 'I want to buy from this person.' The Reel ends and the viewer has no next step. Nothing pulls them toward a conversation with you.
I have seen this pattern especially with manufacturers, boutique owners and service businesses. They make a Reel showing their product or their process. It looks impressive. People comment 'wow' and 'nice work.' But the caption says nothing useful. The bio has no clear offer. The link in bio goes to a homepage that explains nothing within five seconds. The entire chain from attention to enquiry is broken. You fixed the first link and ignored the rest.
There are three specific things you need to change. First, your Reel has to be made for your actual buyer, not for maximum strangers. A steel fabricator does not need a million views. He needs thirty architects and contractors in Pune to see his work and understand what he does. Targeted, specific content about real problems your buyer faces will always outperform a viral trick aimed at nobody in particular. Second, every Reel needs one clear next step. Not five options. One. 'DM me the word QUOTE and I will send you our rates.' 'Click the link in bio to see our catalogue.' 'Call us to book a site visit.' One action. Said clearly.
Third, your bio and your profile need to do the selling that your Reel cannot. Most business profiles on Instagram read like they were written in a hurry. No clarity on what they do, who they serve, where they operate, and what the buyer should do next. Your bio is the first place a genuinely interested viewer goes after watching your content. If it confuses them or tells them nothing useful, they leave. Treat your bio like a ten-second pitch to a serious buyer.
There is also a deeper issue I see with many founders. They are making content about themselves or their process, not about the buyer's problem. 'Look at our new machine.' 'We just completed another order.' 'Here is our workshop.' These are not wrong, but they are not enough. The content that actually generates enquiries is content that makes the buyer feel understood. 'Three things to check before you place a bulk order for custom packaging.' 'Why most event venues quote low and charge high — and how to avoid it.' That kind of content attracts the right person and builds immediate trust. If you want to think through what content would actually work for your specific business, a one-to-one consultation is often the fastest way to get there without wasting another six months guessing.
One practical thing you can do this month: go through your last twelve Reels and count how many of them have a clear call to action in the caption. Not a vague 'follow for more' or 'like and share.' A real, specific instruction that tells a buyer what to do if they are interested. Most founders I do this exercise with find that the number is zero or one. That alone explains the silence. The content is doing its job of getting attention. You are just not asking for the business at the end of it.
Instagram can genuinely work for Indian MSMEs and service businesses. But it works like a sales conversation, not like a billboard. A billboard just needs to be seen. A sales conversation needs to move somewhere. Every piece of content you make should move a potential buyer one step closer to talking to you. Views are a vanity number until you build that path. Once you build it, even a Reel with 800 views can bring you three good enquiries. That is what actually matters.
