Why Your Landing Page Gets Clicks But No Calls

Why Your Landing Page Gets Clicks But No Calls — Website & SEO article by Abhijit JK, brand and business growth consultant

You are spending money on Google Ads or Meta Ads. The dashboard shows clicks. Maybe even a decent click-through rate. But enquiries? Almost nothing. The phone is quiet. The WhatsApp is empty. You start wondering if your product is the problem. It almost never is. The problem is your landing page.

Most business owners I meet treat the landing page as an afterthought. They run the ad first, then quickly throw together a page — or worse, they send all traffic to their homepage. The homepage is built to introduce your entire business. The landing page has one job: make the visitor take one specific action. These are two very different things, and mixing them up is the single most expensive mistake I see in paid campaigns across Indian MSMEs.

Here is what a visitor experiences when they click your ad. They had a specific problem in mind when they searched. Your ad spoke to that problem. They clicked because they expected an answer. Then they land on a page that talks about your company history, shows five different services, has a navigation bar with eight links, and buries the contact form somewhere at the bottom. In under eight seconds, they have left. You paid for that click. You got nothing back.

The first thing your landing page must do is confirm to the visitor that they are in the right place. If someone searched for 'commercial interior fit-out Pune' and clicked your ad, your headline should say something close to that — not 'Welcome to XYZ Interiors, Est. 2008.' Matching the language of your ad to the language of your page is called message match. Most pages fail here, and it costs them every single visit.

The second failure is asking too much too soon. A long contact form asking for name, company, designation, budget, timeline and project description is not a form — it is an interrogation. A visitor who has never spoken to you does not trust you enough yet to fill all of that out. A simple form with name, phone number and one short question about what they need will always outperform a complex one. I have seen this tested across a manufacturer's website, a coaching business and a B2B service firm — simpler wins every time. If you want a proper look at how your current pages are performing, a brand analysis can surface exactly where visitors are dropping off.

Then there is the trust problem. Indian buyers, especially in B2B and high-ticket categories, need social proof before they call. They want to see that others like them have worked with you and been satisfied. Not a generic 'We deliver quality' line. Actual testimonials with a name, a city and ideally a photo. A recognisable client logo. A photo of your actual team or workspace. These small things reduce the fear a first-time visitor feels. Without them, you are a stranger asking them to pick up the phone.

Speed is another silent killer. A landing page that takes more than three seconds to load on a mobile connection loses a significant chunk of its visitors before they even read a word. Most Indian business websites are image-heavy and unoptimised. Add a slow hosting server and a bloated theme, and you have a page that is technically live but practically invisible. Run your page through Google PageSpeed Insights and look at the mobile score. If it is below 60, your ads are draining money into a leaking bucket. This is also something I assess in a business growth diagnostic for founders who want a clear picture of where digital spend is going to waste.

The fix is not complicated. One clear headline that matches your ad. One specific offer or next step. A short form or a prominent WhatsApp or call button. Two or three trust signals — a testimonial, a client logo, a photo. Fast load time. No navigation bar that tempts the visitor to wander. That is a working landing page. It is not about design awards. It is about one conversation starting between you and a potential buyer. If you want to think through this properly for your business, a one-to-one consultation is the fastest way to get a clear plan built around your specific category and customer.

Getting clicks is the easy part when you are putting money behind it. Getting the visitor to stop, read, believe you and then reach out — that is the real work. Most businesses skip that work and then blame the platform, the audience or the product. Fix the page first. Watch what happens to your cost per enquiry.
