Why Your Website About Page Fails to Build Trust

Why Your Website About Page Fails to Build Trust — Website & SEO article by Abhijit JK, brand and business growth consultant

Most business owners I meet have put real thought into their home page. They have updated their services. They have added a contact form. But the About page? It is a company profile copy-pasted from a brochure that was written in 2018. And that page is quietly killing your chances of getting enquiries.

Here is the problem. When a buyer lands on your website and does not know you, the About page is often the second thing they click. They want to know: who is this? Can I trust them? Are they serious? If your About page opens with 'Established in 2009, we are a leading provider of…' — they are already losing interest. That sentence tells them nothing they care about.

I have done website audits for manufacturers, service firms and retail brands across Bengaluru and other Indian cities. The About page pattern is almost always the same. There is a block of formal company history. A list of milestones nobody asked for. A team section with job titles but no faces or real names. And a mission-vision statement that reads like it was borrowed from a publicly listed company. None of it builds trust. It just fills space.

What a buyer actually wants to know from your About page is simpler than you think. They want to know who is running this business. They want to understand why you started it. They want to see that you have done this before for someone like them. They want to feel that there is a real person behind the business, not a corporate shell. That is it. If your About page answers those four things clearly, it will convert far better than any fancy design.

The fix starts with the founder. If you are running the business, show yourself. A real photograph — not a passport photo, not a blurry event picture — but a clear image of you at work or speaking or with your team. Then write two or three sentences about what you do, who you do it for and why you started. Plain language. No jargon. Most buyers make their decision in the first ten seconds of reading. Give them something real to connect with in those ten seconds. If you are unsure how to position yourself on this page, a one-to-one consultation can help you find the right angle.

Proof matters more than claims. Instead of writing 'We are trusted by hundreds of clients,' show one specific result. Name an industry you have worked in. Mention a city. Say how long you have been doing this. Numbers and specifics always beat adjectives. 'We have helped over 40 textile manufacturers in Surat and Bengaluru improve their buyer communication' is ten times more believable than 'We are a trusted name in the industry.'

One thing I see missing almost everywhere is a clear next step at the bottom of the About page. Most businesses end the page with nothing. No call to action. No link. No invitation. A buyer who has read your About page and liked what they saw is now warm. They are interested. But if there is no 'Talk to us' or 'See our work' button at the end, they drift away. You lost them at the final step. This is a five-minute fix that can change how many enquiries you get this month.

If you want to understand exactly where your website is losing buyers — not just on the About page but across every section — a structured website audit will show you the gaps clearly. I have seen businesses fix three pages and double their enquiry rate within sixty days. Not because of better design. Because the words finally matched what the buyer needed to hear at each stage.

Your About page is not a formality. It is a sales page dressed in casual clothes. Treat it that way. Write it for the buyer who is deciding whether to trust you — not for yourself, not for an award submission, not for a brochure. The business owners who get this right are the ones who consistently get enquiries from cold visitors who have never heard of them before. That is the goal. And it starts with one honest, specific, founder-led About page.
